Friday Night Anime Block: Battle Angel Alita
<begin>
Sadly, I’m running a bit short of time the fall evening, so I’ll have to make this one brief. However, I do not come empty-handed. Tonight I’ve managed to round up for you the part 1 and part 2 OVAs for the English subbed release of Battle Angel Alita, apparently released in the US as ‘Gunnm‘ (which was news to me, actually).
I’ve been a fan of the manga for a while now (in fact my first failed foray into attempting to draw anime used it as a source model), and it really is quite in keeping with our dystopian theme. After all, what could be more off-putting than entering the story by being a cast off cyborg literally expelled from the waste chute of the ruling class’s floating cathedral of power?
Oh, right. To then discover you have no idea who you are, yet somehow have a particular knack for making things not move quite so much and become increasingly bereft of life. Lovely.
Not entirely unlike Ghost in the Shell crossed with DMZ. Although I believe this predates both, and they’d probably both hate the comparison.

OUT FROM THE NIGHT, FROM THE MIST, STEPS THE FIGURE.
NO ONE REALLY KNOWS HIS NAME FOR SURE.
HE STANDS AT SIX-FOOT-SIX, HEAD AND SHOULDERS.
PRAY HE NEVER COMES KNOCKING AT YOUR DOOR!
SAY THAT YOU ONCE BOUGHT A HEART,
OR NEW CORNEAS,
BUT SOMEHOW NEVER MANAGED TO SQUARE AWAY YOUR DEBTS.
HE WON’T BOTHER TO WRITE OR TO PHONE YOU.
HE’LL JUST RIP THE STILL-BEATING HEART FROM YOUR CHEST!
I wake up with that in my head every Tuesday.
Okay, so the fact that you quoted Repo! just upped your cool meter from recovering creep to cool undercover.
Cash Money FTW!
