Cash Money’s 2nd Quarter Dinosaur Factorum in Revue

LAND OF THE LOST - Greetings, friends and potential bone thieves.  It’s time again to take stock of all the news dinosauria of the past three months.  Or for the two weeks preceding this one. Weeeeeeeeeeeeeird.  Note: three of these dinosaur-themed articles came out on Jan. 28.  What’s the deal there?

Rare Montana dinosaur skeleton stolen from private land turned over to researchers

AP (Canada), Jan 24, 2010

I love me a good bone theft and this one’s got it all.

It’s a tightly-packed little tale that involves a paleontological sound-byte machine, a serial bone thief, a half-way house, and a “mean and nasty little dinosaur… you wouldn’t want to meet it in a dark alleyway.”

Robotic dinosaurs to walk on Oxford Street

BBC, Jan. 28, 2010

“Oxford Street? Oh, I say, here now, old bean, steady on!”

Nice big animatronic dino showcase over in Jolly Old London.  I’d be jealous, but hey, we got that stuff over here, and when we do something, we do it right!

New “Destroyer” Dinosaur Found, Was T. Rex Relative

National Geographic News, Jan. 28, 2010

Oh, snap! “Destroyer?” For real? What is this thing called? Chews-nails-and-spits-Brazilian-jujitsu-saurus Rex? God damn!  OK, let’s see here:  ”Bistahieversor sealeyi—eversor.”

Now, I didn’t make that name up, but I also fell asleep halfway through reading it.  That’s not a name, that’s a Latin short story!

Also: you ever notice how anytime a dinosaur has pointy teeth it is always referred to as “a relative of T.Rex”? That’s akin to sticking “a relative of Ted Kennedy” on every headline about a drunk driver.  It’s a nice hook for the layman, but come on, now!

China spends billions to study dinosaur fossils at sites of major discoveries

Washington Post, Jan. 26, 2010

I may eat Chinese for lunch, but the Chinese are eating our lunch at just about every other point in the day.

This bone bed in Zhucheng is apparently the biggest in the world and its excavation marks a new brave learny age for the until recently sciencephobic China where residents “have been digging up “flying dragon” bones for use in medicinal concoctions for generations.”

So, China is taking the lead here, too. I don’t know how he’ll justify it, but I’m sure Glenn Beck will blame Obama.

Anyhow, China’s crazy interest in dinosaurs leads to…

Newfound fossil boosts dino-bird link

Discovery News, Jan. 28, 2010

Birds are descended from dinosaurs?  Holy shit, really?  Let’s completely forget that my parents I did my 6th grade science project on this very fucking subject back in 1992 and call Robert Bakker PEE AITCH  muthafuckin’ DEE who pretty much made this theory paleontological cannon when he wrote The Dinosaur Heresies back in 1986.

Just kidding. This is pretty cool.  Fun little guy named Sinosauropteryx. Like me that -opteryx suffix, yes I do.

Well, anyhow, this find by China leads to…

Dinosaurs sported red feathers, scientists say

AP, Jan. 27, 2010

This appears to be The Big Dinosaur News that has caused the other news organizations to dig up and regurgitate any dinosaur news they had rotting around the joint as fast as possible.

Fossilized pigments have been identified in Sinosauropteryx pointing that his feathers were of a “russet” color.

Bonus points: referring to the color as “Conan O’Brien.”  That is quite a stretch for a topical tie-in, AP.  Hope you didn’t pull anything.

For real though, China: nice one!  I take back two -no THREE!- of the bad things I’ve said about you.

Sadly, there have been no new high-profile dinosaur-themed songs created since last we spoke so here is another song off the They Might Be Giants albumn, Here Comes Science:
