Friday Night Anime Block: Code Geass

There is absolutely nothing I crave more when laid up on the couch with a bout of seasonal allergies, a cold, a hangover, or day gone horribly rancid, than anime. Throughout my life I’ve carried it with me as comfort food for the soul. I think there’s something innate in such a highly stylized genre and presentation; it becomes compelling in its affirmation of itself. Or it could be that I’m just hung up on animation, this too is entirely possible. Sadly, Google search results for things like ‘dystopian anime’ are shoddy at best and incoherent at worst. I’m hardly well versed in the medium, but I know what I like. Luckily, some friends have provided me with some excellent recommendations lately that I thought should be passed along. So compiled here are the first four episodes of Code Geass, a mildly faustian tale of a world in which the Britannian Empire has conquered Japan. Socio-economic upheaval meets political maneuvering set in a noir future backdrop of military mech and pretty much unexplained super human abilities. Enjoy!

When I was a child…

I dreamt of incredible things.

To my knowledge this has already made the rounds, but I felt it was worth reposting just because of the amazingness. Our dear BB caught at bit of the tip.

Though I may catch some flack for this, Steampunk does not represent either a movement, nor truly an aesthetic ideal. Rather, it performs brilliantly as a guiding principle. I will posit that Steampunk (however you want to define it),acts more so as a renunciation of ideals. Let the imperfection flow! This is what and who we are! Those who are old enough will remember the Labor disputes that led to the initial punk (oh yes, those wankers were pure ???) As a society, let’s focus on creation. It doesn’t have to be perfect; it doesn’t even have to be as good as this. Can we please have a playground where doing something is better than doing nothing?

Let’s be a kid for a bit.

Lucha Mini – File this one under WTF?

Honestly, I sort of wish I was making this up.

Cash Money sent me a link that was too good to pass up. The BBC is reporting that a 65(!) year old woman has been arrested in relation to the deaths of two twin midget wrestlers (!!) in a Mexican hotel room. Her supposed accomplice, The Fat One (!!!), is still at large. Authorities believe the midgets were killed by an overdose of eye-drops slipped into their drinks by the women in an attempted robbery.

Mexican midget wrestlers arrest

I think I recall reading this in a short story once. No, wait. That was all in my head.

We’ve officially established that truth is ravenously, frothingly, blood curdlingly, stranger than fiction.
