Everybody was Kung Fu Fighting

Because it just seems appropriate given our recent stint of impugning of the world around us.  I was awakened by a sweet cup of coffee by my bedside and a loving smile.  When I am happy songs will pop into my mind as if they are the theme for that moment.  I took my cup of sweetness and stared out my window over the streets of the city.  The morning is grey with light bits of rain in between the wind.  The trees still have their orange leaves but only clinging by a small thread to the half-bare trees.  There seem to be more on the ground than on the branches.

I sipped my coffee and this song came into my head and I got that spine-chilling feeling that only happens when you know you’ve heard the truth.  So enjoy the morning air for it is amazingly breathless and full of life but only if you pull it in.

and just for the pure fun of it…this piece of jewel was a rough among the youtubes…

Friday Night Anime Block: Battle Angel Alita

<begin>

Sadly, I’m running a bit short of time the fall evening, so I’ll have to make this one brief. However, I do not come empty-handed. Tonight I’ve managed to round up for you the part 1 and part 2 OVAs for the English subbed release of Battle Angel Alita, apparently released in the US as ‘Gunnm‘ (which was news to me, actually).

The Continuing Education of Cash Money: What the hell ARE “Family Values” anyway?

MINNESOTA FAMILY COUNCIL – During every presidential election and certainly during Maine’s recent go round with Teh Gheys and Teh Rights, there is a phrase that gets thrown around: “Family Values.”

It seems that all politicians are fer it. I can’t ever remember anyone coming out and claiming to be ag’innit nor have I seen any documentation in the news of people who have been outed as ag’innit on the covert-like.

That said, I have no idea what Family Values are or aren’t.  And more importantly, if got ‘em I do or got ‘em I don’t.  Bruce, perhaps you can explain my problem better than I:

Preeeeeeeeeeeeecisely.

So, to make sure I don’t botch up a future presidential run any more than I already have *cough*fuelingchildsoldierwithmeth*cough* let’s you and me try to find out what these Family Values are together… like we used to… like a family.

Graph Alert: The New York Times actually comes up with a decent infographic?!

Surprisingly, yes!

Better yet, not even one that relates to Apple market share, rates of alcoholism in West Virginia, or Glenn Beck (*ahem* Pig-fucker conservative commentator).

This is one I’d love to embed (with due accreditation, of course) but sadly, NYT after all. Nevertheless, hit the link below for a decent look at the calculated average unemployment rate for a variety of demographics over the last twelve months (as of Sept). Change a few of the criteria around,  and a couple quick comparisons will reveal rather distinctly  exactly how far this country still needs to go in the areas of gender and racial equality. I suppose the one bright spot to a few of these numbers is the long term value that higher education can provide, despite its increasing cost and therefore declining availability. Moral of the story: get in school now, before you have to mortgage your first-born, your cat, and a kidney or two just for a little job security. There’s an Economy on, after all.

Geek Girl Abode

I might have hit the jackpot when it comes to geek girl blogging.  I was doing some of my never ending web research (others call is web surfing) when I stumbled upon Geek Girl Blogs.  My eyes grew wide with excitement and I practically squealed a Woot out!  I spent about two hours on their site clicking the many links to the other girly geeky blogs.  /sigh.  the internet never fails to amaze me, oh, how I love thee.  The site appears to be ran from down under (which is über cool) and also features podcast!

Friday Night Anime Block; The format returns, sort of: Gantz

<begin>

Heh. This may be some sort of twisted personal best, but I’ve just discovered that a Google search for ‘Dystopian Anime’ now returns this column on both pages 1 & 2 ( who knows, maybe others too, I got bored).

Leaving aside what that actually might imply about my posting, in honor of this achievement we’ll take a little departure this evening into the just purely off-kilter, as opposed to the slightly more linear and focused oddities that my coverage usually entails.

I recall some years ago, during the midst of my redbull-fueled Netflix addiction, one evening the nascent BoL Consortium was debating the wisdom of watching a movie. Alas, the only thing we had at our disposal was an as-yet-unheard-of by any of us anime by the name of Gantz. Within the first few minutes, there were several yelps from the back of the room in addition to some notable cringing. As Cash Money put it to me recently, “It starts bizarre and crass. And ends bizarre, crass, and unexplained.”

While his description is utterly on the mark (and I’ve had more than a few cringe-worthy moments myself with this series), nevertheless there are probably a few guilty moments of that internal monologue we’ve all had at one point or another. In a sense I appreciate the attempt to make the characters sympathetic by being unlikeable. It’s a tactic that has served a number of authors well (I’m looking at you Chuck Palahniuk!), and sort of a staple of the modern sense of absurdism. It’s interesting to see it translated to the anime form.

Hoo boy.
The heroes that I look to in my times of despair are mocking me.
That’s a… hoo… that’s a bad sign, right there.  Jeez!  Et Tu, Daily Show?

OOP!

Time to anesthetize!

Let’s drink heavily EAT!  And – you know what – let’s not do this halfway, let’s go to fucking McDONALD’S.

Awwww, what’s the matter, sweet pea?  Too good to enjoy a McNugget?  Think you can do better?  Sounds like a CULINARY CHALLENGE to me.

The CHALLENGE: to create a dish using ingredients from McDonald’s.  Could be an upgrade of classic menu item, could be using parts of items to create something completely new.  The sky is the limit and the budgetary concerns are actually pretty manageable.  The economy and all that.  Hell, even I will be getting into the act on this one, folks, so you’ve really got no excuse not to participate.

The RESULTS: we’ll post the results up here in a couple of weeks so get in the lab then post a comment down in the comment… post… thing… there on the bottom and we’ll try to contact you to add your submissions to the results post.

AND THEN FEED THEM TO ME!
